2003 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The modern american wagon. introductionthe ford explorer is one of the best sport-utilities in its class. A stiffer frame and a fully independent suspension provide superior ride and handling on road and off road. Its v6 was revised last year and a v8 was added as an option. Both are available with a superb five-speed automatic. It's roomy, capable of seating seven people when equipped with the optional third row that folds flat into the cargo floor when not being used.  for 2003, ford added more standard equipment and important new options. Xls and xlt come standard with cloth upholstery; eddie bauer and limited come trimmed in leather.  an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. Ford's new five-speed automatic transmission 1095) is optional and we highly recommend it. Xls comes a high level of standard equipment, including a new am/fm/cassette/cd stereo, but it does not offer some of the high-zoot options available on the other models, including the v8. An $1150 sport group for the xls adds the premium center console, step bars, body-color metallic wheel lip moldings, and 16-inch aluminum wheels.  xlt 28,745) gets nicer sport cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver's seat, body-colored exterior trim, and more luxury features, such as a temperature gauge and compass, map lights and dome lights, outside approach lighting, extra power outlets, and an illuminated keypad for keyless entry. The five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and aluminum alloy wheels replace steel wheels. New for 2003 are a chrome grille and black-grain outside door handles. Leather upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual manual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. The top two explorer models differ only in their distinctive trim: eddie bauer comes with arizona beige bumpers, moldings, lower bodyside cladding, satin-nickel wheels and grille, and p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a silver grille and unique wheels; the limited model is available in white pearl-coat paint with frost accents.  options for all models except xls include third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), running boards 395), power adjustable pedals 120), reverse sensing system 255), and power moonroof 800). The canopy also promises improved side-impact protection by staying inflated for a much longer period of time. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend ordering the safety canopy. Dual front airbags are standard, and feature smart technology that adjusts their inflation rate according to the severity of the accident. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard on all models; abs allows the driver to brake and steer at the same time in a panic stop. Seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. This newest explorer achieved a 4-star driver/5-star front-passenger ratings in the government's national highway traffic safety administration front crash tests. walkaroundthe current ford explorer is the same length overall as the pre-2002 models, but it rides on a longer wheelbase (by 2 inches) and a much wider track. Pushing the wheels out toward the corners makes the explorer more stable and more comfortable. All new last year, this explorer shares only its name with the pre-2002 models involved in the firestone tire recall.  the explorer's styling is fresh, contemporary. It looks solid and handsome. Smoothly integrated front and rear fascia are used in place of the traditional bumper treatments. Jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Yet this newly designed explorer clearly evokes the previous-generation explorer. No one will have trouble identifying it. Few will notice it at all. I dropped something next to the curb while getting out of the explorer one dark night; hitting the button on the key fob illuminated the approach lights and i immediately spotted it. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but ford says it's a popular feature among loyal owners.  the standard roof rack is designed to support up to 200 pounds. For messier cargo, there's a new nbx package 1110), which includes a yakima multi-use loadwarrior cargo basket, special black exterior trim, special seat cloth, and 17-inch machined aluminum wheels mounted with b. Goodrich rugged trail t/a p245/65r17 tires. interiorthe ford explorer is a comfortable vehicle on long trips. Convenience features abound that make it pleasant while driving and when stopping. The eddie bauer model comes with the traditional beige steering wheel and pinhole leather seating material. Handsome gray wood accents lend a luxurious appearance. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handle add to a light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse-fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm and supportive, with lots of adjustments.  adjustable pedals, a telescoping steering wheel and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubby holes with rubber mats provide space for wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate my one-liter bottle from poland springs. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a bit of a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. Seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. But the buttons that control them are mounted on the sides of seats, which is a bit awkward. Reaching down to the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters; finding and pressing the seat-heater button is a challenge. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the height adjuster. But rake is easy to adjust, and there's a knob on the up-level seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  the second row of seats, the row we recommend for those who didn't get to drive or sit up front, is quite comfortable. 2012 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The ford escape is a mid-size sport-utility vehicle with credentials that make it equally suited to urban commutes or weekend off-road outings. The xlt and limited trims feature the same 2. 5-liter engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. A 240-hp 3. 0-liter e85 capable v6 is an available upgrade on xlt and limited models. Standard safety features include front airbags, front seat mounted side airbags and side-curtain airbags for front and rear passengers. For 2012, the escape receives one new exterior color.

2008 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Great suv for big-family expeditions. introductiontrue expeditions require additional transportation conveyances: horses, boats, cars, for example. With a towing capacity around 9,000 pounds, the ford expedition can tow any of these.  after redesigning the expedition for 2007 while also lowering the price, ford adds a new top end king ranch model for 2008, as well as an available rear backup camera and power-retractable running boards.  the expedition is meant for utility, not posing. It carries people, hauls gear, tows boats, and pulls campers. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to create a useful rear cargo area. Due to that size, however, the expedition is prone to lean in turns and is not easy to maneuver in close quarters.  with its combination of utility, a smooth, stable ride and a pleasant interior, the 2008 ford expedition is a fine choice for families that tow boats and take driving vacations. lineupthe 2008 ford expedition comes in two lengths, the standard model with a 119-inch wheelbase, and the expedition el with its 131-inch wheelbase. Every expedition is powered by a single-overhead-cam 5. 4-liter v-8 that is rated at 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. A tilt steering wheel (leather-wrapped for 2008), front and rear air conditioning with rear controls, remote keyless entry, automatic headlights, alarm and an am/fm/cd stereo with mp3 player connectivity and rear controls are also part of the package. Exterior standard equipment features 265/70r17 tires on alloy wheels, running boards, roof rails, fog lights, power-adjustable outside mirrors (now heated), and a rear liftgate with flip-up glass and a rear defroster/wiper/washer system. Also added as standard for 2008 are keyless entry keypad, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, overhead console, and illuminated visors. An off-road package 200) for 4wd xlts has tubular side steps and skid plates.  the eddie bauer 35,865) and eddie bauer 4wd 38,675) are trimmed as outdoor adventure vehicles and are distinguished by a longer list of convenience features as standard equipment, notably the expedition's unique power-folding split third-row seat. Other standard features include leather upholstery, 10-way power adjustable driver's seat, six-way power adjustable front passenger seat, memory for the mirrors and driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, an am/fm stereo tuner with 6cd changer, trip computer, conversation mirror, mirror-mounted turn signals, and protective cladding for the lower body panels. The eddie bauer el 38,515) and eddie bauer el 4wd 41,415) are equipped like the standard wheelbase versions but have front tow hooks and 255/70r18 tires instead of 17s.  options for eddie bauer models over and above those of the xlt include heated and cooled front seats 625), new-for-2008 power running boards 995), power rear liftgate 495), a navigation system 1295), rear-seat dvd entertainment system 1995), the new rear backup camera 455), and p275/55r20 tires.  the limited 38,025) and limited 4wd 40,925) add heated and cooled front seats, 10-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, universal garage door opener, power rear quarter windows, power-adjustable pedals, and 255/70r18 tires on chrome alloy wheels. The limited el 40,675) and limited el 4wd 43,575) are equipped the same but also have front tow hooks.  the new king ranch 39,965) and king ranch 4wd 42,865) have upgraded chaparral leather upholstery, king ran. walkaroundthe ford expedition is a truck and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. This is a good identity to have, because ford trucks continue to have an outstanding reputation for utility, reliability and durability.  both the long and regular-length versions of the expedition use many of the components from the ford f-150 pickup. However, the expedition features independent rear suspension, chassis technology that improves driving precision, ride comfort, and rear-seat roominess.  this third-generation expedition features a three-bar grille, large headlights, and a domed hood that combine to deliver a look that's both distinctive and respectable. There are several different wheel designs, including 20-inchers with a chrome finish. The expedition doesn't have the style of gm's sport-utilities, but at least it avoids the science-fiction look of the nissan armada.  expedition el models stretch the wheelbase by a foot to 131 inches. Overall, the el measures 14. 8 inches longer than the standard expedition, and that adds 24 cubic feet of cargo volume, an increase from 108. 3 to 130. 8 cubic feet behind the front seats.  both the standard expedition and the expedition el are big vehicles, measuring more than 17 feet from nose to tail. As a result, crowded parking lots can be challenging. The expedition has a turning circle of nearly 41 feet, while the el requires 44 feet.  they're also heavy, as even the base 2wd expedition weighs 5578 pounds, while the base 2wd el tips the scales at 5825 pounds. The addition of 4wd adds another 235 pounds to the bottom line.  the new king ranch model can be identified by its gold exterior accents and unique wheel design.  the expedition comes with running boards as standard equipment. For 2008, power retractable running boards that deploy when the doors are opened are an option. interiorthe 2008 ford expedition features a rich blend of finishes, textures and color. Indeed, a fully optioned expedition king ranch is the best representation of modern american-style luxury within ford's lineup. Wood, chrome and leather make the expedition an inviting place to spend a day on the road. Leather-upholstered examples are available with a heating/cooling feature that makes them a more comfortable companion in winter and summer. Generous driver's seat travel helps accommodate taller drivers, and it's a perfect match for the expedition's movable pedals, so a wide range of drivers can be sit comfortably.  the second seating row also reflects ford's thoughtful approach to passenger comfort, as the standard 40/20/40 bench seat incorporates a center section that slides forward up to eleven inches, bringing a child seat within easier reach of front-seat passengers. Optional second-row captain's chairs with a center-aisle pass-through can be substituted for adult-rated comfort.  packaging advantages afforded by the expedition's independent rear suspension enable the third-row seat to deliver more comfort for adults compared to the accommodations provided by the chevy tahoe. In fact, third-row room is among the best of any suv, though three adults won't want to sit in the back for long. The high ride height also makes getting in and out a task for children.  the expedition's liftgate with its flip-up glass hatch makes access to the cargo area very easy. The expedition's second- and third-row bench-type seats fold flat into the cargo floor, affording a long cargo area that can be easily loaded. In this regard, the expedition is much better designed than gm's large suvs. The expedition is also available with an optional power-folding third-row seat and electronically powered liftgate to make it even easier to load cargo. However, the seat cushions of the second- and third-row seats are a little slim in order to allow the seats to fold properly.  the expedition is about more than convenience. A dvd-based navigation system with sizable 6. 5-inch screen is available as an option. 1999 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Minor improvements throughout make it better. introductionif mousetraps were 17 feet long, one might characterize the expedition as ford's better mousetrap. Since its introduction three years ago, ford's biggest sport-utility vehicle has been a resounding sales success. The assembly plant in wayne, michigan, has been running full steam to meet the demand for the expedition and its luxurious near-twin, the lincoln navigator.  why is the expedition so successful? The reasons may go beyond the current enthusiasm for large sport-utilities. The expedition is selling like hot cakes at least partly because it does everything it was designed to do and it does it well. Its good looks certainly don't hurt, either.  with demand running high, ford has wisely made only evolutionary changes for 1999. Both engines get more power -- without hurting epa fuel economy ratings. The expedition has been certified for 1999 as a low-emissions vehicle, or lev, in states that have adopted california's tougher emissions regulations.  a new front fascia, grille and bumper system with fog lamps incorporated into the lower valence give the expedition a fresh look. And the base model comes with more standard equipment; even though the base price has gone up, this move actually lowers many out-the-door prices. walkaroundthe stylists at ford took a sensible approach when they set out to shape the expedition. They already had two winners to their credit -- the f-150 pickup and the explorer. So they borrowed the best elements from each to create another success. From nose to windshield, the expedition shares sheet metal with the f-150. No panels interchange between expedition and explorer, but the resemblance is unmistakable.  this combination of ingredients works well. The expedition is handsome, with a sloping hoodline and rounded front end that reflect attention to aerodynamics. It's a design that pays off with improved fuel efficiency and reduced wind noise. As a matter of necessity, the sides and back are shaped more for utility than style. Clever use of trim and rounded corners provides some visual definition, however.  stretching more than 17 feet from nose to tail, the expedition is certainly no compact. There's no way to disguise that. Gm's suburban is even longer, adding a foot-and-a-half to the total. Ford touts the expedition's shorter length as a benefit when trying to fit into a garage. With little demand for plain, entry-level vehicles in this class, ford equips the xlt well and the eddie bauer even better. Two seating configurations are available. Ordered with optional front bucket seats and a center bench, the expedition can comfortably haul five passengers. Ordered with the standard front full-width seat and center bench makes room for six passengers. Well-padded chairs provide comfortable seating.  the optional third-row bench provides seating for two more passengers -- three if they are small. First- and second-row occupants get separate heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls; a third set of controls for the third seat is optional.  a curved dashboard houses instruments and controls where they can easily be reached. Soft-touch coverings are applied to switches and door panels. The window switches are lighted internally at night, a nice touch that not all vehicles carry. One new optional feature this year is an industry first: at the touch of a dashboard-mounted switch, the pedal cluster can be electrically adjusted fore-and-aft. Surprisingly, this bulk doesn't make it especially difficult to drive. Speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering works in the driver's favor by keeping steering effort low. Brake pedal feel is light, yet precise. Lots of large windows, along with big mirrors, make it easy to see in all directions. Extra care and attention is required when maneuvering in close-quarters, however.  the ride quality is good, though it is not as soft as that of a traditional family sedan or wagon. An advantage of the expedition's long wheelbase is a resistance to pitching over freeway expansion joints and other irregularities. When driven on back roads, the expedition does not lean unduly in corners, nor does the front end dive excessively under hard braking.  an optional load-leveling system uses compressed air to compensate for varying loads while improving ride quality. Built into the system is a one-inch increase in ride height. While serious rock-climbing is not suggested, occasional forays off the beaten path can be undertaken without fear of being left stranded. The 4. 6-liter and 5. 4-liter v8s are identical save for displacement. They are smooth and quiet. The 5. 4-liter v8 produces 345 foot-pounds of torque, enabling it to pull a trailer of up to 8300 pounds -- when ordered as a 4x2 with 16-inch wheels and the 3. 73 axle ratio. An expedition 4x4 with the smaller 4. 6-liter engine and big 17-inch wheels can only muster 5500 pounds. summaryeven though this year's changes are relatively minor, the expedition enters its third year as the clear leader of its class. Its blend of strength, refinement, comfort, good road manners and exceptional finish quality is not matched by the current suburban. The shorter length of the expedition is an admission ticket to a larger number of garages.  the lure of the expedition is its versatility. The expedition can carry a large family in limousine-like splendor, pull a trailer, move cargo or explore places beyond pavement's end. assembled inwayne, michigan. options as testedall-terrain tires 380) with 17-inch alloy wheels 185), limited-slip differential 255), skid plate package 105), trailer towing package 390), load-leveling suspension 815), trailer towing group 390), skid plate package 105), power adjustable pedals 120), 3. 73 ratio rear axle, california emissions, and comfort convenience group 2,560), which includes captain's chairs with center floor console and six-way adjustable power driver's seat, third-row removable bench seat rear seat, rear heating and air conditioning, privacy glass, dual illuminated visor mirrors. model testedxlt 4x4.
